Johnson & Johnson is facing more than 2,000 lawsuits alleging that the manufacturer has failed to warn customers of the cancer risk associated with using talc powder, according to USA Today newspaper. In the last year, several juries have delivered powerful verdicts in support of women who were diagnosed with ovarian cancer due to their regular use of talc power. Talc is a moisture-absorbing mineral that is used as a drying agent.
- In October 2016, a jury in Missouri ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay a California woman $70 million in damages. The 62-year-old woman was diagnosed with ovarian cancer after using Johnson & Johnson’s talc power for more than 40 years.
- In May 2016, a Missouri jury awarded $55 million in damages to a South Dakota woman who alleged in a lawsuit that her use of talc baby powder led to her ovarian cancer.
- In February 2016, another jury in St. Louis ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay $72 million in damages to the family of an Alabama woman who died of ovarian cancer at age 62. The woman had used Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Power and Shower to Shower for more than 35 years.
Documents introduced in the trials indicate that Johnson & Johnson had been aware of studies linking talc powder use and ovarian cancer for decades, but has not warned consumers. The manufacturer maintains talc is safe and denies the cancer risk.
Do You Have a Lawsuit if You Used Talc and Have a Cancer Diagnosis?
Manufacturers have a legal obligation to create and market products that are safe when used as directed and to warn of known dangers. When manufacturers sell unsafe products and fail to warn adequately of potential dangers, they may be held accountable through product liability lawsuits. These are civil lawsuits filed by the cancer victim or her family.
