Who is entitled to SSI benefits? Many people refer to SSI as if it were the whole disability program. However, the truth is that the Social Security Administration offers two disability programs. One is called SSDI and the other is SSI. SSI actually stands for Supplemental Security Income, and SSI can supplement an SSDI claim. This is if you have one or some people will apply for and qualify for straight SSI, Supplemental Security Income.
SSI is one of the disability programs offered by the Social Security Administration and you have to be income resource eligible to access it. What that essentially means, is that you have to qualify via the Federal Poverty Guidelines. The Guidelines are essentially a program for people who do not have a lot of money. At the end of the day, our government and the program expects that you will use your own money to support yourself before you would turn to the government for help.
