Social Security Disability Compassionate Allowances

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has a program to make it faster for those who suffer from certain serious illnesses to get benefits. Compassionate Allowances are available for certain individuals with certain serious medical conditions. If you qualify for a “compassionate allowance,” you can begin receiving disability benefits in weeks instead of months.

Although the Compassionate Allowances program is meant to streamline the claims process, many deserving claimants still face roadblocks. The attorneys at Marasco & Nesselbush are committed to helping SSD claimants obtain the disability benefits they need and deserve.

About SSD Compassionate Allowances

The Compassionate Allowances program is a method of expediting Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) claims. You still must qualify for SSI or SSDI based on your income or work history. The skilled attorneys at Marasco & Nesselbush know the SSD requirements inside and out.  We will help you to determine which program you may qualify for, and we will advise you on how to get started.

There are 225 conditions that have been added to the Compassionate Allowances List as of January 2014, and the SSA regularly adds new conditions. The medical problems on the list include serious and incurable illnesses including various types of metastatic cancer and different types of dementia, for example.

You can see a complete updated list of Compassionate Allowances conditions on the SSA website, with newly added conditions displayed in red.

Your condition may be on the list if it is conclusively diagnosable with objective medical testing, and if it is likely to be fatal or significantly and permanently interferes with your ability to work.

Our attorneys can help you determine if you qualify for a “compassionate allowance.” If so, we can provide the medical records to document your diagnosis, so that the SSA expedites the processing of your SSD claim.

While it can normally take between four and six months on average to get a decision on a disability benefits application, a claimant with a condition on the Compassionate Allowances List may receive an answer from the SSA within weeks.
