Navigating Social Security as Offices Remain Closed

A courthouse in Rhode Island

The following information is provided by the Social Security Administration (SSA): Due to the continued threat of COVID-19, the Social Security Administration offices will not meet the proposed January 3, 2022, reentry date. It is currently unknown when the Social Security Administration offices will be open to the public. In the meantime, Social Security applications can be filed virtually, voluntary hearings will continue via online video and phone, and limited in-person appointments are available for critical issues.

In-person appointments are significantly limited to critical cases. Those looking for help with disability benefits who are currently without food, shelter, and medical coverage may be eligible for an in-person appointment. In-person appointments are also available for those seeking help with their Social Security Number, who are applying for their first Social Security Number card, or need to update their information to receive income, medical care, benefits, or other resources. If you believe you qualify for an in-person appointment, call your local Social Security office.

Access to most Social Security services will be easiest to obtain through the Social Security Administration website or by phone. You can call the Social Security Administration using the national number, 800-772-1213, or your local office number. Also, through the website, you can file claims and appeals, check your application status, and more. Upon filing claims and appeals, local Social Security employees will get in touch to walk you through any additional steps and/or set up virtual hearings. For assistance with the Social Security Administration, people can virtually appoint attorney representatives through the e1696 form.
